P.A. man charged with the murder of infant son

The Prince Albert Police Service have arrested and charged a man for second degree murder, in connection to the death of a 13-month-old boy on Thursday.

Police say yesterday they responded to a home on the 200 block of 23rd Street West at 5:44 a.m. for a complaint of a family dispute. Following the visit, they took one person to police cells.

However just before 11 a.m. that same day, police went back to the home after a report of a homicide of a child. Once police arrived they found the young child dead and arrested the father Kaij Brass.

Brass appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court Friday morning and was remanded until Feb. 28.

Meanwhile, an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday and the public can expect a police presence in the area for the remainder of the day.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

Prince Albert Police Chief Jonathan Bergen has ordered an investigation into the initial response to the residence at 5:44 a.m. under the S. 54.1 of the Police Act 1990.

The Saskatchewan Public Complaints Commission has also been notified and is investigating.

“The death of a child is a tragedy that leaves family and loved ones devastated. As an organization, there is nothing we can say to lessen the grief and torment at this shocking loss of a deeply loved child from our community,” as stated in the media release.

“We do understand and expect there will be questions going forward, and while we cannot comment on the specifics of the investigation now underway, we trust and support an independent review of the police response in this file by the Saskatchewan Public Complaints Commission, and remain committed to transparency and accountability.”
