Excitement is building for the opening of Prince Albert’s new Ronald McDonald House.

Construction near Victoria Hospital is expected to wrap up next month and a ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for January 18. Saskatchewan Ronald McDonald House Charities CEO Tammy Forester recently provided paNOW with a tour of the building.

As we come through the family entrance on the west side of the building, Forester explains that the massive building that includes 12 guest rooms was truly a community driven project. In addition to input provided by northern families who have stayed at the Saskatoon building, there was also design input from an elders advisory circle.

As we proceed down the west wing, there is an office area and a large laundry room. Forester explains the 12 guest rooms come in three different sizes, ranging from a room with one queen bed to rooms with two queen beds and a twin bed.

“With the new hospital tower being built, we think that this will become a bit of a hub for the north, so we have built this house so we can add on more rooms,” she said.

While not yet in place, a large glass sliding door will connect the hallway to the courtyard area.

In addition to a “fun forest” room where kids can come to get a toy, Forester explained every child who stays at the house, will be gifted a with a special quilt. The program was started in the 90’s and the quilts are donated from various corners of the province.

“We’ve kept it up and kept it going because we’ve heard from families it a very important program.”

Down the east wing, there is a community pantry that Forester says will always remain fully stocked.

For families living in northern and rural Saskatchewan, access to pediatric care often requires significant travel. The new Prince Albert House will help reduce the financial and emotional burden of being far from home by keeping families close to the medical care their child needs while providing the comforts and support that help them stay together.

And while the building is nearing completion, the work is not yet finished. Ronald McDonald House Saskatchewan still has $1.3 million to raise to complete the capital campaign that is making this project possible.

Community support has brought the House to this point, and it’s expected individuals, families, businesses, and organizations will help the project cross the finish line.

Outside the building, there is ample parking space for families and a space where ceremonies can be performed. And all of it will be fenced off.

As the tour comes to a close, Forester once again expresses her excitement about seeing all the pieces come together.

“I can hardly wait to see people living here.”
