Arctic air incoming: Prince Albert to cool off again

Dec 13, 2021 | 12:00 PM

Prince Albert is running the gauntlet of winter weather this week, as we’re starting out with icy fog, potentially getting some snow by Tuesday, and wrapping things up with a descent into colder weather.

By Wednesday night, people will be plugging their cars in once again, after that system of potential snow passes through the area on Tuesday.

“Behind the system, we are expecting a gush of colder, arctic air more typical for this time of year,” said Terri Lang, regional meteorologist with Environment Canada. “Average 30-year highs for this time of year are around -11 (Celsius) and overnight lows are -22 C so it’s going to be feeling more like it’s supposed to this time of year.”

The colder pattern isn’t going to shoot in and out the way the last one did either, as Lang said she expects it to last into the weekend and next week. In fact, it could lead to a colder Christmas.

“It looks like we’re kind of getting into that colder pattern for a while,” Lang said. “We’re keeping an eye on Christmas because folks are traveling, but it is looking like it might stick around for a while. Very typical for this time of year. We always want good weather for traveling and such, but we’ll just see.”

The words most residents of Saskatchewan don’t want to hear this time of year are “polar vortex”. While things are undoubtedly about to get colder, there’s no sign of the worst of the cold weather our province has to offer in this forecast.

“With the polar vortex, that’s something that is there all the time and just kind of swirls down every once in a while,” said Lang. “That’s when we get into the really face-numbing temperatures.”

Last winter may have spoiled Saskatchewan residents a bit, as by this time the temperatures had spent almost as much time above zero as below in many parts of the province. While this year will be colder by comparison, it’s so far been an average winter.

“So far, this following winter has been pretty mild, so I think we’re pretty spoiled by it,” Lang said. “When it actually goes towards more typical temperatures, we’re surprised by that, and we shouldn’t be.”

Lang added the fog setting in before the cold weather could produce icy conditions on the road, so people should check the highway hotline before they travel.
