Raiders drop second straight against Rebels

Nov 21, 2021 | 12:09 PM

The second leg of the Alberta road swing for the Prince Albert Raiders fared unfortunately similarly to the first as they surrendered a flurry of offense against an opponent well up the standings from them, even though they outplayed them for stretches of the game.

This time, the team in question was the Red Deer Rebels.

Ben King and Kai Uchacz scored twice each and Kalan Lind added another as the Rebels downed the Raiders 5-1. Evan Herman got the lone goal for Prince Albert, despite them outshooting Red Deer 29-23.

Lind opened the scoring off a funny play off the end, while that may have been quite deliberate on the Rebels part. Hunter Mayo shot the puck wide of the Raider net and it bounced off the end boards right to Lind, who was waiting in perfect position to make it 1-0.

The second goal of the game, and first for King, happened after a broken play at centre ice. As Remy Aquilon fought with a bouncing puck, the Rebels forced it past him for an unexpected two-on-one. Taking a feed from Arshdeep Bains, King walked in alone and ripped one high-glove on Carter Serhyenko.

An uneventful second period, which saw just 13 shots on goal in total despite a power play for each team, gave way to a hectic third. Just 51 seconds in, right after a Raider penalty kill had ended successfully, Uchacz gave the Rebels all the breathing room they needed and more, left alone in front with a bouncing puck off a shot block that he snapped home.

As the game opened up with the Raiders pressing for offense, both teams had chances. It was the Rebels who made good on theirs. Another pretty passing play ended with King left alone in front, and he cut to the backhand, elevating his shot just enough to get it over the outstretched skate of Serhyenko to make it 4-0.

Still the Rebels were not done. Uchacz sent home his second from in close under a minute later to build the lead to 5-0. Though the Raiders bit into the substantial lead late, with Evan Herman setting the screen on a shot by Landon Kosior and then knocking home the rebound, the pushback came too late to do anything more than pretty up the scoreboard.

The loss drops the Raiders to 6-11-1 on the season. Their next chance to get into the win column comes on home ice Wednesday against Moose Jaw at 7:00 p.m.
