Raiders enter game against strong Oil Kings’ team on a roll

Nov 10, 2021 | 11:48 AM

After a slow start to the season full of new faces and roster moves, the Prince Albert Raiders seem to have found their footing as they take on the Edmonton Oil Kings (9-3-1) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.

After starting the year 2-7, the Raiders have gone 3-0-0-1 after getting three points out of the home-and-home series against Brandon to end October, and an impressive two-game sweep over the Saskatoon Blades. They outscored the Blades 10-3 on the weekend. Sloan Stanick had a hat trick and an assist to register his first points as a Raider in the Saturday contest, while Tyson Laventure scored twice and added an assist.

Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said the recent success has come from his team playing as a unit and getting some big-time performances from goaltender Carter Serhyenko. In his last three starts, Carter Serhyenko has won all of them and surrendered just four goals on 72 total shots for a 0.974 save percentage in that span.

“Playing as a team, that’s the big thing. You can have all the individuals you want, but if you’re not playing as a team, nothing works,” Habscheid said. “The other thing is we’re getting a save, and that makes all the difference in the world. Guys feel more confident in front, and that certainly helps when you’re goaltender’s playing.”

The Raiders may need some goaltending against the Oil Kings, as they boast Sebastian Cossa in goal. Cossa has never had a season in the WHL where he’s had below a .921 save percentage, or more than a 2.23 goals against average. He’s 7-3-2-1 so far for the Oil Kings with already two shutouts, a .927 save percentage, and 2.03 goals against average. The Detroit Red Wings picked him in the first round in this past NHL Entry Draft.

Dylan Guenther is another can’t miss player for the Oil Kings. The ninth overall pick from the Arizona Coyotes in 2021 has seven goals and 15 points through 14 games for the Oil Kings, leading the team in both categories.

The Raiders did strike a deal with the Oil Kings earlier in the season, as they acquired Ross Stanley from Edmonton in exchange for Graydon Gotaas. Stanley has played in four games for the Raiders so far, Gotaas has not yet played for the Oil Kings.

Tune in to CKBI for voice of the Raiders’ Rob Mahon’s call of the action, starting with a pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
