Public library debuts play about mental health and addictions

Oct 7, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Local playwright, Adreanna Boucher has spent the last 10 years writing a play that explores the cycle of mental illness and addiction through her own eyes.

The play, called ‘Sting’ is a story about her life, intertwined with her mother’s own life and death. It will play at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library.

“Sting is about the rather troubled and complicated relationship I had with my mom,” Boucher told paNOW. “She struggled with mental health issues, and then in later years with addictions as well.

“Pieces of this play date back to my teenage years when I carried a lot of hurt, anger, and sadness.”

After the closing show, there will be a ‘talk back’ session, led by a mental health professional in Prince Albert.

“The audience is welcome to ask us about our personal stories that we all brought to the process, and to share some of their own if they feel inspired to,” Boucher said. “It will be a safe space for discussion.”

The play being named ‘Sting’ is a metaphor for being stung by a bee, and being constantly hurt, particularly by those who you love the most.

“We end up more damaged and we carry that forward with us for the rest of our life,” Boucher said. “All those hurts just keep affecting us, just like the venom that affects our system.”

Focuses of the story will be about alcoholism, mental illness, and abuse. The message for the audience to take away will be about hope and that those who suffer are not broken.

“Producing this play has been transformative for me because I play my mom,” Boucher added. “It’s been a remarkable exercise in truly attempting to understand what made her tick, what led her to make the choices she did, and, deep down, what was hurting her so deeply.

“For me, this project is part of breaking the cycle. That’s a continuing process.”

Proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test will be required for admission by guests. Non-medical face masks are mandatory, and the facility will provide courtesy space between seats.

The show will contain sensitive subject matter that could be triggering, as well as strong language.

‘Sting’ debuts tonight at the library at 7:30 p.m. It will also play tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. The show will have its closing night on Saturday, also at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased ahead of time, at www.eventbrite.ca or at the door, prior to the show.
