SPEAKING OUT

‘I am being penalized’: Former Sask Party MLA speaks out

Oct 4, 2021 | 12:25 PM

A former member of the Saskatchewan Party who made waves over her vaccination status is speaking for the first time.

Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson resigned from the party caucus last week after it came to light she was not vaccinated.

“I never disclosed my status,” Wilson said in an interview with CKOM. “I said I would go home and think about it and then, apparently, they took that to be affirmative. And because I did not disclose my medical history, I am being penalized.”

Wilson said last Thursday, after news of her resignation broke, that she could no longer support a government that has been slowly eroding our rights and freedoms during the pandemic.

“The desire for a just and fair democratic province has helped shaped my decision to leave and sit as an independent member. I have taken time to listen to the people in my riding and reflect on my role as an elected official and citizen.”

Premier Scott Moe offered his take on the scenario during a press conference later that day. Moe said he accepted Wilson’s resignation because of her “mispresenting her vaccination status.”

On May 14, Wilson could be seen wearing an “I got my COVID-19 vaccine” sticker while sitting in the Legislature.

Wilson addressed that on Monday saying MLAs are asked to support causes daily, and she simply never noticed the sticker.

“After this daily occurrence of over a decade in my career, you won’t even glance at what’s pinned to you as you’re concentrating on your debates, your speech notes of the day.”

Wilson said that she believes she’s being penalized for protecting her private medical information and added that the Premier never asked for her to step down.

“Equality rights under the Charter of Rights of Freedoms protects rights and civil liberties under both sides of the debate.”

Wilson will now sit as an Independent MLA for Saskatchewan Rivers. She’s represented the riding since 2007 and was re-elected for a fourth term last year.
