Mintos can’t put the double on the hungry Wildcats

After the Prince Albert Mintos skated away with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday, the Warman Wildcats were hungry for revenge.

They became the first team to shut out the Mintos, doing so 4-0 Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

Dustin Renas led the charge for the Wildcats by scoring a hat trick for the Wildcats. He opened the scoring with a one-timer on the power play at the 15-minute mark of the first period. Renas got his second of the game shortly after the first intermission. The Mintos turned the puck over at their own blueline, and the Wildcats’ Mason Bueckert pounced on the loose puck and set up Renas right at the doorstep to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 2-0.

Renas then completed his hat trick seven minutes into the second period on a shot from the right circle, eight seconds before Connor Gabriel scored to make it a 4-0 score and force the Mintos to burn their timeout. Bueckert had primary assists on all four Wildcat goals.

Although the Wildcats were able to keep pressing on the gas pedal for the remainder of the game, they weren’t able to get another. Jayden Kraus, goaltender of the Mintos, stopped 41 out of 45 Wildcats shots. Alex Worthington made 25 saves for his shutout.

The Mintos are now 2-2 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday to take on the Estevan Bears, 7 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
