This fall, the Mann Art Gallery is showcasing two different art exhibitions, featuring the work of Diana Chabros and Hanna Yokozawa Farquharson.

The exhibitions became open to the public on Sept. 7, and will be on display until Oct. 21.

The main gallery features the work of artist, Chabros. The exhibition is called ‘Samskara.’

This exhibition of paintings explores forms of energy, cycles of life and death, and authentic relationships through story as a means to understand interdependence with the land.

“Diana’s paintings are large landscapes. They fill the gallery in a beautiful way,” Marcus Miller, art gallery curator told paNOW. “They are landscapes of the deep southwest Saskatchewan, where her grandparents homesteaded.”

The project space showcases artwork from Farquharson. This exhibition is called ‘Gaia Symphony.’

“These works are created from antique kimonos,” Miller said. “The kimonos are carefully taken apart and are reconstructed as minimal works.”

These crafted artworks draw on the artists deep respect for and knowledge of Japan’s iconic garment. While growing up in Japan, Farquharson previously attended kimono classes and recalls how beautifully her mother’s hands moved when folding and caring for her own kimonos.

Visually, the two exhibitions contrast each other but are tied together due to their cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

“They look nothing a like at all,” Miller said. “I think they both have very spiritual impulses behind them.”

The art gallery will be hosting a closing reception for the galleries on Oct. 21, the event will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Farquharson will be performing live on crystal singing bowls at the reception.

“People will get a chance to talk to both of the artists and see the lovely work,” Miller said.

“We are concerned about the spike in COVID numbers. It will be a safe event. There will be food and drink available, but there will be no self-service. We will have people serving people individually.”

Due to a recent announcement from the provincial government, all non-medical face masks will be mandatory indoors beginning Sept. 17.

Beginning on Oct. 22, Chabros will be hosting a three-day painting workshop at the art gallery. Registration or any inquires can be directed to her email at skystory@sasktel.net.

Following this exhibition, the Mann Art Gallery will showcase artwork from artists Greg Hardy and Ken Van Rees.
