Suspect in James Smith Cree Nation murders makes first court appearance
The man charged after a double murder on the James Smith Cree Nation on Sunday made his first court appearance Wednesday morning.
Shawn Moostoos, 33, appeared by phone in Nipawin Provincial Court to answer to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
After a brief hearing, his case was adjourned. Moostoos was remanded in custody and is to appear by video in Melfort Provincial Court on Sept. 20.
Three people were shot on the James Smith Cree Nation on Sunday, leading the RCMP to issue an emergency alert as it searched for Moostoos. He was arrested Monday in Melfort.
