Father and son win team golf championship at Cooke

The father and son duo of Martin and Trevor Ring came out victorious at the 2021 Northern Team Championship at Cooke Municipal Golf Course over the weekend. It came just days after Trevor was among the many firefighters involved in battling the Cloverdale fire.

The Ring’s shot 19-under-par for the two-day tournament. Martin said this is the first time they’ve won it in the three years the golf course has been putting it on. The event draws attention from across the province hosting golfers from Regina and Saskatoon.

“My son hits the ball an incredibly long way and the combination between that and some short game and some putts going in it turned out to be a very good weekend,” Martin said.

“We both like to walk, we both love to play the game, and for us to spend a couple of days and have that kind of success is pretty special.”

Trevor told paNOW they don’t get to play with each other as often as they’d like but try to play once a week.

“The other times in tournaments it’s usually match play and we’re trying to beat our brains in against each other,” Trevor laughed. “To be on the same team it’s definitely cool, different game styles. I’m a little bit longer and I use wedges and he’s using longer clubs coming into the green but he’s the better putter and I’m the better driver right now.”

To add to the impressive win, Trevor had a busy seven days as a member of the Prince Albert Fire Department fighting the blaze that spread northeast of Prince Albert early last week. He explained he was at the Cloverdale fire for over 30 hours straight, but it didn’t seem to influence his golf game.

“The fatigue was there but it just clicked on the weekend even though I was tired, and I didn’t have much practice going in,” he said. “[Martin] was kind of pushing me to play on Friday [the day before the tournament] so I could get a couple swings in but other than that it felt good.

“Marty being 55 plus and me being 33 now, our combined age is almost 90 and we pulled this one out so it’s pretty neat,” Trevor added.

It was also a somber weekend. Martin explained the club lost a long-time member Ronald Harris recently, who was 65 years old. All members who participated wore green ribbons in his honour.
