City unveils designs for new Crescent Acres playground

The City of Prince Albert has unveiled designs for a new playground in the Crescent Acres neighbourhood at AC Howard Park.

Parks manager Tim Yeaman told paNOW the city always tries to add special elements when building new play structures and the upgrade at AC Howard park is no different.

“The Tree Tops design of the main structure is something brand new, never seen in the city before,” said Yeaman.

He explained it offers plenty of climbing opportunities, as well as a slide with a unique auditory feature.

“You’re able to—as the kids call it—’skirt’ down the slide,” he explained. “The skirting is basically the noise that it makes when you’re going down.”

Yeaman said the sand portion of the park will be left intact but an Oodle swing and spinners will be added to the area.

The city allocated $100,000 for the new playground in this years budget, plus $30,000 for additional items like benches and new lighting.

The Crescent Acres site was among four identified as top priorities for replacement in a 2019 inventory of the city’s playgrounds. While the Lions Park playground in West Flat was replaced last year, the play structure at Little Red River Park has already been removed and will be replaced as part of the Rotary Adventure Park planned there. Yeaman said the Rotary Adventure Park is in the final stages of design and will hopefully be open to the public by July 2022.

The final priority 1 playground, located at James Isbister park in West Flat, is next on the city’s list for replacement.

Construction at AC Howard Park is set to start in mid-June, with the goal of having the new playground open for mid-July.

“It is very exciting for the neighbourhood,” Blake Edwards, the city councillor representing the area said in a media release. “They were happy to have input in the planning and are now very excited to see the new park come to fruition.”

In other parks news construction on a new outdoor fitness park at the Alfred Jenkins Field House is expected to start soon.
