Crescent Acres park set to receive $100,000 upgrade

A Crescent Acres park is getting a major makeover with the installation of a new $100,000 playground later this year.

The new equipment will replace the small play structure currently in place at AC Howard Park. Proposed elements include slides, monkey bars and rotating components like spinning cups or a merry go round.

“It’s something exciting for the community,” Parks Manager Tim Yeaman told paNOW. “It’s long overdue.”

Earlier this year, the city sent around 100 surveys to area residents to get their input on what they wanted to see at the playground. Kids were even invited to draw their suggestions.

The result is a playground that caters to kids aged 2-12 and complements existing natural elements in the park with components like an embarkment slide built into a hill.

“When we look at playgrounds, we certainly want to try to provide something different within every community if we can,” said Yeaman.

The city is currently tendering for the design, supply and construction of the AC Howard Playground. Once a supplier has been selected and plans drawn up, the city plans to host a final virtual community open house in April to get any additional comments on the design. Construction should be completed no later than July 16, Yeaman said.

The Crescent Acres site was among four identified as top priorities for replacement in a 2019 inventory of the city’s playgrounds. While the Lions Park playground in West Flat was replaced last year, the play structure at Little Red River Park has already been removed and will be replaced as part of the Rotary Adventure Park planned there.

The final priority 1 playground at James Isbister park in West Flat is next on the city’s list for replacement.
