Former junior hockey coach faces assault, sexual assault charges

A former coach of the Regina Pats and Humboldt Broncos has been arrested in Alberta on charges of assault and sexual assault.

The Regina Police Service says 66-year-old Bernard Charles Lynch is in custody in Alberta after being arrested on a warrant Saturday. He has been remanded and will be sent to Regina as part of an ongoing investigation. He is expected to arrive in Regina this week.

Most recently, Lynch was coaching in Ontario. He was head coach of the Fort Frances Lakers, a junior A club in the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

He was suspended Jan. 2 after the Fort Frances Lakers Hockey Association learned of what it described as “inappropriate communications from Mr. Lynch to a player.” Lynch was later terminated.

“Mr. Lynch’s conduct demonstrated a clear breach of the applicable codes of conduct,” the association said in a written statement released March 8.

Before becoming the head coach of the Lakers, Lynch coached the Edson Aeros. Accusations were made about Lynch during his time there and his contract with the team was not renewed.

Lynch was the head coach of Humboldt’s SJHL team in the mid-1980s and of the WHL’s Pats in the late 1980s. His coaching career also includes stops in Europe and with the midget AAA Regina Pat Canadians in the late ’90s.
