No more games after guidelines extensions

P.A. Minor Hockey games to be cancelled for rest of the year

Feb 25, 2021 | 5:00 PM

Prince Albert Minor Hockey Association (PAMHA) has officially cancelled games for the rest of the season.

According to PAMHA media relations coordinator Brad Toporowski, the decision was made after the Government of Saskatchewan extending their current COVID-19 guidelines until at least March 19.

Most of the minor hockey seasons usually end in anywhere from the beginning to the end of March according to Toporowski, who added the association didn’t have much of a choice but to not restart games this season.

“For everybody involved, you’re waiting for the monthly update and the carrot’s dangling there to lead you along. You just don’t get the options given that the teams were hoping for,” Toporowski said. “We were at least hoping to get back to practicing with full teams, but we still have to skate with eight. It’s for sure a downer for the kids, coaches, and the parents, and everybody involved with minor hockey.”

Hockey games at the minor level, including similar limitations on other sports, have been postponed by the province since late November.

Small eight-player practices, with social distancing and masks being worn, can still continue for minor hockey teams on city ice until the end of February. After that, teams can skate on community club ice.
