Prince Albert man charged with attempted murder and arson, in connection to fire at Sask. Regional Park

Feb 23, 2021 | 11:02 AM

Nearly three and a half years after a mobile home burned to the ground with two people inside, a 51-year-old man from Prince Albert is facing a number of charges including attempted murder.

Kirk Andrew Rudolph appeared Monday morning at Regina Provincial Court. In addition to attempted murder, Rudolph has also been charged with aggravated assault, arson, obstructing justice and counseling to commit public mischief. The case was adjourned to Feb. 24, and will be spoken to in Swift Current.

The case dates back to the morning of Oct. 1, 2017 when Leader RCMP responded to the report of a fire at a mobile residence located in Lemsford Ferry Regional Park just before 9 a.m. The two occupants of the residence, Rudolph and a woman, were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The mobile residence was completely destroyed by the fire and was investigated by the provincial fire scene examiner. Due to the initial information available at the time, the cause of the fire was deemed to be inconclusive.

Fast forward to February 2019, and Leader RCMP received additional information reporting the fire was not accidental and the adult male who was an occupant of the mobile residence was allegedly responsible. The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit South (MCU-S) took carriage of the investigation and gathered the evidence required to lay charges.

The charges were formally laid on Feb. 16, and police issued a warrant for Rudolph’s arrest. The next day, police had reason to believe Rudolph travelled to Whitehorse, Yukon. MCU-S requested assistance from Yukon RCMP to arrest Rudolph. He was arrested by Yukon RCMP without incident on Feb. 18 and returned to Saskatchewan.
