Triple homicide case to be tried by judge and jury

Feb 1, 2021 | 12:22 PM

A man accused of murdering his parents and young son, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and elected to be tried by judge and jury.

That was the outcome of a hearing Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Nathaniel Carrier, 28, is facing three counts of first-degree murder, as well as one of attempted murder in relation to his young daughter. The case dates back to March 28, 2020.

The election by Carrier’s lawyer Terra Lennox-Zepp, represents the first sign in nearly 10 months of the case proceeding and comes after repeated calls from both a judge and the family for progress and resolution.

As part of his own remarks Monday, Judge Hugh Harradence reminded lawyers the previous comment by Judge Felicia Daunt telling lawyers to set a pre-trial date was “not a suggestion.”

The case will be spoken to Feb. 12 at Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench during a case management type hearing. It’s unclear however if trial dates will be set at that time. No pleas have been entered at this stage of the proceedings.

Carrier remains in custody and has yet to appear in court in person or by video.
