Police respond to ‘disturbance’ at Prince Albert Correctional

Sep 30, 2020 | 10:44 AM

The Ministry of Corrections and Policing confirmed there was a disturbance in the yard at the Prince Albert Correctional Tuesday afternoon.

The disturbance was de-escalated around 6 p.m. No other details have been provided. The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed by the ministry.

A witness at the scene, who claimed to work at the jail, told paNOW there were inmates on the roof of one of the buildings, and said the incident was gang-related.

Parkland Ambulance confirmed paramedics responded to the men’s Correctional Center late Tuesday afternoon. No one from the facility was taken to hospital.

Concerns around violence at the men’s jail are nothing new. At this time last year, the union representing provincial correctional officers was calling on the Sask. Party government to address rising tensions.

The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union (SGEU) responded to several incidents at that time related to a rise in violence at both the Saskatoon and Prince Albert Correctional Centres.

“It isn’t acceptable that when you get hired as a corrections officer you should expect that. Nobody goes to work expecting to get hurt or to be thrown in the middle of a gang fight,” President Bob Bymoen said.
