Province records 17th death from COVID-19, nine new cases

Saskatchewan has recorded its 17th death in relation to the COVID-19 virus.

The person was from the South, had tested positive for the virus, and was in their 70s.

The information was part of the latest daily provincial update which also offered advice for people attending gatherings this coming holiday weekend.

There are nine new cases of the virus in Saskatchewan today, bringing the provincial total to 1,218.

Of the new cases, three are in the South, two are from the Saskatoon region, two are from the North region, one is from the central region and one is from the Regina region.

Of the 1,218 cases there are 294 considered active. A total of 907 people have recovered.

There are 13 people in hospital, with eight receiving inpatient care. There are three in Saskatoon, two in the central region, two in the South and one in Regina. Five patients are in the intensive care unit with three in Saskatoon and two in Regina.

Of the province’s total cases, 200 are travellers, 616 are community contacts (including mass gatherings), 293 have no known exposures and 109 are under investigation by public health.

Across the province 61 cases are health care workers (although not all sourced their infections from work), 347 cases are from the Far North, 267 from the South, 239 are from the Saskatoon area, 136 are from the North, 139 are from the central region and 89 are from the Regina area.

There are 185 cases involving people aged 19 and under.

There are 404 cases in the 20 to 39 age range, 378 are in the 40 to 59 age range; 212 in the 60 to 79 age range and 39 among people in the 80-plus age range.

Of the total amount of cases, 51 per cent are females and 49 per cent are males.

To date, 93,669 tests for the virus have been performed in the province. Yesterday 873 tests were performed. Testing is now available for anyone who requests it, regardless of whether they have symptoms.

August Long advice

The long weekend is coming up and the province is asking you to plan for a safe one. Plan activities with families or individuals in your extended household group. Remember public health orders remain in place to prevent transmission of COVID-19.

Preventative measures are key. Remember to wash your hands frequently, practice physical distancing, wear a mask if you cannot distance, limit contacts outside your home to your extended group and stay home if you are sick.

“There may be social or peer pressure to attend events that you feel pose an unacceptable amount of risk to you and your family. Decisions not to attend are your own and are not cause for ridicule or shame,” the province said in a media release. “Family and friends should understand and respect measures that people are taking to stay healthy and prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
