Humboldt Broncos assistant coach suspended following criminal charge

The Humboldt Broncos have suspended one of its assistant coaches.

In a tweet Sunday afternoon by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), the team says assistant coach Curtis Toneff is facing an undisclosed criminal charge and will be appearing in court in the near future.

Toneff will no longer have any association with the team until further notice.

The Broncos said Toneff was charged by the RCMP. RCMP has not returned a request for comment from 650 CKOM.

Toneff is originally from Nanaimo, B.C. He joined the Broncos at the beginning of the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach following five years coaching in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

The 27-year-old played his junior hockey in the BCHL, VIJHL, Manitoba Junior Hockey League and SJHL, appearing in 33 games with the Battlefords North Stars in 2011-12.
