Carlton Comprehensive Public High School is celebrating the graduating class of 2020.

With the COVID-19 pandemic putting limits on large scale gatherings the celebrations were moved online. Carlton’s graduation was broadcast on YouTube after being pre-recorded.

The production included musical performances by students along with speeches from representatives from the public-school board and the principal.

The ceremony saw pictures of students displayed on screen, in some cases starting with baby pictures and ending with a more recent photo. Students also picked a teacher who had an impact on them during their time in school, the teacher then read a message about the graduate’s favourite memory and future plans.

Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division board chair Barry Hollick recorded a message for graduates. In his remarks Hollick took time to recognize the entire school community.

“I want to commend the students their parents and the Carlton staff for working together to bring about a successful conclusion to this important year in your lives,” he said.

He added this would be a year they would never forget. Hollick also congratulated students on their accomplishments and said they have the chance to embark on a new journey in life.

“You now have the opportunity to choose what path the future holds for you,” he said.

Students as well heard from their two class valedictorians in Bria Howden and Taylor Berge. During their address the pair touched on some of the year’s highlights and what they learned during their high school years, which included looking both ways before crossing the street to visit Dominos Pizza.

The two speakers acknowledged the online celebrations were not what anybody would have envisioned but talked about the need to look at the bigger picture.

“Today the needs of our community outweigh our individual desires,” Berge said.

However, the two valedictorians added their class is the first in history to graduate online after doing their exams online as well.

While closing out their speech Howden and Berge thanked the school’s teachers for caring about their students and creating close relationships.

“If Carlton has taught you anything its that you matter,” they both said.
