Local day camps ready to proceed

After several months with little to do and nowhere to go, children in Saskatchewan are gaining more and more options for activities.

Phase four of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan has allowed for the operation of day camps for children and youth, a summer staple for many families. While some COVID-19 related restrictions will provide challenges, it is no doubt a welcome opportunity for local kids.

One such camp being run in Prince Albert this summer is Camp FrancoFun, a french-focused program put on by the French-Canadian Society of Prince Albert.

Last year, the camp could accommodate upwards of 30 children per day, with a daily average of around 20 throughout the summer. This year, the day camp will be limited at 15 kids, and Executive Director Christian Fure acknowledged the difficulty that may present.

“It will be very challenging, but our students [who operate the camp] are experienced from the past, and they know how to handle the challenges,” Fure said.

Just because the provincial government is allowing day camps to run doesn’t mean all parents are comfortable letting their children participate, but if there are families holding back it doesn’t seem to be impacting Camp FrancoFun.

At this point, the camp is at 90 per cent capacity according to Fure, but he is still encouraging anybody interested to reach out.

“[They] can still send in the application and then we can accommodate the children,” Fure said.

The Re-Open Saskatchewan plan guidelines do allow for multiple groups of 15 children if the facility is large enough where defined areas can be separated.

Among other recommendations, the guidelines encourage activities be held outside when possible, and younger children are educated about physical distancing principles as much as possible.
