City fixes sinkhole on Central Avenue

An old watermain sprang a leak over the winter and caused a sinkhole to form on Prince’s Albert Central Avenue Monday.

“In the frozen conditions you might have some kind of a wash out underneath the frozen ground, and they (sinkholes) don’t expose themselves until the ground starts to warm up,” Director of Public Affairs, Wes Hicks told paNOW.

Hicks noted the watermain in the area dates back to 1907.

Water to the area was shut off and crews quickly filled the hole. They will wait for warmer weather to fix the watermain, Hicks said.

“We’ll fix that when the weather gets better because there is still a lot of frost in the ground. Digging on Central Avenue at an intersection, there is a lot of different infrastructures in there. In addition to water, sewer, and storm there is natural gas, power, cable, and phones. It’s better to dig once the frost is out of the ground so we don’t rupture any other lines,” he said.

Despite water being shutoff at the Central Avenue location, the new watermain installed at 10th Avenue a couple years ago, is tied into the network so service to the area is not affected.

Looking ahead to big projects this construction season, he said city council will have two to review at next Monday’s council meeting.

“One is the extension of Marquis Road. It’s the first phase, so the underground utilities; water, sewer and storm. The other one is the new West Hill Trunk Sewer Main,” he said.
