Restrictions in place at Wahpeton

Apr 9, 2020 | 12:00 PM

Wahpeteon Dakota Nation, northwest of Prince Albert, is following the lead of a number of other First Nations in the province and country, and imposing a number of restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the community.

According to a statement from the band, the community is on lockdown and access has been restricted.

“We have only one main road and we have our security in place 24 hours a day,” the statement said.

As per the direction of chief and council, only two band members are being allowed to leave out of Wahpeton at one time, and only for valid reasons such as food supplies, medical and or work purposes.

A community curfew has also been imposed and band members have been encouraged to follow the guidelines and procedures laid out in an information package, supplied by the band’s pandemic team.

“Our Chief John Waditaka along with the assistance of his council and the health center employees with the pandemic team have worked effortlessly to address the needs of our community members and for all safety/ precautionary measures,” the statement said.

In the past two weeks, both Montreal Lake Cree Nation and Sturgeon Lake First Nation have imposed similar restrictions.
