P.A. bus driver ‘fighting for his life in hospital’ after assault, family says

David Maxemiuk is well liked by everyone who knows him, and that’s why his family say they cannot comprehend why the 61-year-old was brutally attacked in broad daylight and left to die.

Maxemiuk remains in critical condition at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital, following the incident early Sunday afternoon in the 200 block of Ninth St. E.

Maxemiuk’s sister-in-law Nancy Docking was at the hospital Tuesday, and told paNOW he sustained serious trauma to his chest and brain.

“I went to the scene when it happened and there was a pool of blood. His gloves were on the ground and his coat was off. Why his coat was off, we don’t know,” she said.

Maxemiuk was originally found lying in the back alley area behind his home. Docking explained from what she knows so far, he did not know his attackers, and was approached after parking his car in the garage.

“He’s fighting for his life. He hasn’t woken up since it happened,” Docking said.

Maxemiuk’s sister Violet said paramedics and hospital staff have been forced to resuscitate her brother three times so far, and added attended the hospital to help identify her brother.

“His face was beyond recognition,” she said.

According to the family, as many as three people were involved in the attack but only one person has been charged so far. Maxemiuk’s wallet was stolen and later recovered.

Kenny Donald Morin, 20, made his first court appearance Tuesday and was remanded for a bail hearing Wednesday morning. In addition to Morin’s charges of robbery and aggravated assault, he also faces a second assault charge.

Docking told paNOW she was informed by police Morin is a suspect in another robbery and assault case on the same day. Police have not confirmed the family’s comments, or if more people are being sought, and have only said the investigation remains ongoing.

Residents who live in the area have been asked by police to review their video surveillance, specifically in the areas between the 100 block of Ninth and 10th St. E. to the 400 block of Ninth and 10th St. E.

Residents are also being asked to recall any activity between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Editor’s note: Prince Albert Police originally identified the victims’s age as 60, but family confirmed Tuesday he is actually 61.
