Train Derailment

Highway 16 near Lanigan still closed Tuesday morning after train derailment and fire

Dec 10, 2019 | 8:53 AM

Highway 16 near Lanigan remains closed this morning after yesterday’s train derailment.

The Canadian Pacific rail train came off the tracks between Plunkett and Guernsey at around midnight Sunday night where oil cars caught fire.

Plumes of black smoke from the blaze was causing near zero visibility in the area that led to the closure of the highway.

Since then, a nearby farmyard was evacuated as a precaution.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is responding to the scene and said there is no threat to public safety.

Emergency crews are still on scene but there is no word yet from CP on whether the fire is still burning or not.

RCMP are asking motorists to avoid the area and to detour south to Watrous. That detour will add about an hour to most morning commutes.

There is no word yet on when the highway might re-open.
