Hoback sounds off on Throne Speech

Prince Albert’s member of Parliament is making his opinions known about the federal speech from the throne.

Randy Hoback, said the speech kicking off the next sitting of Parliament didn’t talk about some important issues.

“There was nothing in there that talked about reopening market access for canola, forestry workers, canola producers, manufactures across Canada,” he said.

Hoback, who is currently in Washington D.C. meeting with U.S. officials about trade issues as part of his shadow cabinet duties, said overall he didn’t like what he heard.

“I give it an ‘F’ and it’s something I can’t support,” he said.

Specifically, Hoback said he would like to see the Liberals lay out a strategy on how they are going to deal with trade issues, particularly with China. Hoback said the recent incident where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was caught on camera laughing about U.S. President Donald Trump did not help matters.

“It’s going to be problematic for people who rely on exports into the U.S.,” he said.

In the speech the government promised to take steps to address climate change, cutting taxes for middle income earners along with working to create a national pharmacare program.

In terms of reaching out, Hoback suggested the Liberals could adopt some of the Conservatives’ proposals such as creating a national energy corridor.

Speaking on the Liberals promise to cut taxes, Hoback said given the government’s history on the issue he is skeptical. In the past the government has reduced taxes while eliminating credits and other deductions, Hoback said.

“When they’ve always promised tax cuts, they’ve tended [to take] and put a dollar in one pocket, while they grab $2 out of your back pocket,” he said.

Hoback said he supports current Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer, who has faced criticism in some quarters for his election performance. Hoback stressed his primary focus is on dealing with his duties in the shadow cabinet. He added rank and file Conservatives will decide Scheer’s future when the party holds its annual convention and does a leadership review.

“I have confidence in him for sure. I have confidence in the people that have put him in charge of our party,” he said.
