P.A. paramedics grieve loss of Meadow Lake colleague

Representatives from paramedic services around the province will converge on Regina on Sunday for the memorial service of Leigh Schroeder.

A delegation from Parkland Ambulance will be among the attendees. Parkland’s Director of Public Affairs, Lyle Karasuik, told paNOW Schroeder’s death is being felt across the emergency services community.

“I mean all of us recognize that each and every day we respond to incidents that put our lives on the line,” he said. “This tragedy that took Leigh’s life really hits home for everybody.”

The young paramedic died in a collision while responding to a call north of Meadow Lake on Friday. Two children were also killed in the incident.

Karasuik expects hundreds, if not thousands, of emergency services personnel to be at the memorial in full order dress with medals.

“We will provide a very meaningful and appropriate send off for Leigh,” he said.

‘Foreign services’ provide support in Meadow Lake

In the week following the death, EMS services around Saskatchewan including Parkland Ambulance have sent personnel to Meadow Lake to allow members of the local service to take time off to grieve the loss of their colleague.

Chris Pacey, one of two P.A. paramedics in the community, said the “foreign services,” as locals call them, have been given a warm welcome in Meadow Lake.

“To be able to provide support for those who are fellow brothers and sisters in EMS is so important,” he said. “You really start to see that EMS is a family in the province of Saskatchewan, and nationally even… We’re really just a small little community and we’re all in it together.”
