Feast and Round Dance in P.A. today

Oct 26, 2019 | 9:00 AM

What has become a significant event on the cultural calendar takes place at the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre in Prince Albert today.

Members of the Saskatchewan RCMP and the Prince Albert Police Service are teaming up with local community agencies for the Second Feast and Round Dance in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons.

The inaugural event was held last year in Saskatoon and organizers are stressing today’s festivities are open for everyone to attend. It will include traditional Indigenous ceremonies and foods and attendees are asked to bring their own feast dishes.

“It’s important for the Saskatchewan RCMP to take steps towards reconciliation, to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons, and to enhance our relationships with Indigenous communities,” Inspector Honey Dwyer with the Saskatchewan RCMP Indigenous Policing Unit said in a media release.

Those attending today’s events in honour of a missing or murdered loved one are asked to let organizers know when they arrive so they can be recognized at the event.

Erin Parenteau, Indigenous Resource Officer with the P.A. Police said today’s event is important “as we continue to foster positive relationships between Indigenous people and police agencies across the province.”

The opening ceremony goes at 4 p.m. followed by the feast. The round dance starts at 7 p.m.and ends at midnight.
