Crusaders and Marauders share Canadian Tire Classic cup after tie

For the first time ever in the eight-year history of the Canadian Tire Classic, there was no winner.

The Carlton Crusaders and St. Mary Marauders finished the crosstown rivalry high school football game in a 27-27 stalemate.

Both teams did have a mini-celebration with the cup, more for a laugh than anything else. Members of both teams combined for a dual-team photo.

The Marauders did have the best chance to break the tie. They marched deep into Crusaders territory with less than two minutes, and had the ball on the 10-yard line. But instead of eating up the clock and going for a field goal, the Marauders instead tried to pass the ball into the end zone.

Crusaders defensive back Justin Adamko read the play and made a clutch interception on his own two-yard line to deny the Marauders a chance for points. The Crusaders were able to run the ball out of danger as well to avoid giving up points on a safety or a fumble.

“Your backs are against the wall and at the end of the day, you’re hoping that one of your playmakers makes a play,” Crusaders head coach Lindsay Strachan said. “He came through with what he did. He’s been doing that all year. That’s absolutely huge.

“And we strung a couple first downs together after, because we could’ve given them the ball back there. So the offence came through, too.”

Marauders head coach Curt Hundeby tipped his hat to the Crusaders for making big plays when they needed to. But he was also kicking himself for not settling for a field goal on his final drive.

“I feel like we had a great chance at the end and I take full responsibility for it. I didn’t do the right thing,” Hundeby said. “I didn’t call the right plays to get us to where we needed to go at the end. We were in field goal range and we should’ve kicked a field goal. We were there and we didn’t finish. That’s on me.”

The tie also throws a wrench into the playoff hopes for both the Crusaders and Marauders. As both were sitting on one win, the Canadian Tire Classic cup winner was going to move on into the Tier II postseason.

“The winner of this game was supposed to be into Tier II [playoffs]. But with a tie… it’s a real foggy mess,” Hundeby said. “We’ll have to figure out what happens.”
