Local skating gets in on Battle of the Blades

The Prince Albert Skating Club is getting in on the fun as a longtime television show returns to the airwaves.

CBC’s Battle of Blades, which features a pairs skating competition is asking local skate clubs to produce their own routines and programs to help promote the show.

Sheila Fazio, a coach with the P.A. Skating Club said they decided to get in on the action for a few reasons.

“We decided to try it out, we’re doing it just to promote Battle of the Blades within our club and working with one of the minor hockey teams to get a skater out here and have some fun,” she said.

For their pairs skating routine, the P.A. skating club’s Luke Vedress was paired with Ashley Vezeau, who is a member of an area hockey team. Vezeau only started figure skating three weeks ago to prepare for her performance with Vedress, which they did late Thursday afternoon at the Art Hauser Centre.

Vezeau said she was interested in doing a pairs skating program because it was the chance to do something different.

“It has been very challenging, but its been really fun,” she said.

For Vedress, doing a routine with Vezeau was the first time he has worked with a partner. He said he finds pairs skating to be easier than what he does normally skating as a single.

“[it’s] different,” he said.

Fazio said the local skating club has a good relationship with the minor hockey community and also felt doing something like this would be good for skating as a sport.

“We do work with minor hockey with our power skating program and we want to continue that fun relationship as well on the ice and this was just a good opportunity to have some fun and bring a different angle to skating,” he said.
