Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament returns after year off

Nov 4, 2026 | 4:33 PM

The Lake Country U18 AA Timberwolves are set to welcome some of the top hockey teams from across the prairies this weekend as they prepare to host the fifth Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament.

The tournament returns with eight competing teams after going on hiatus last year due to a lack of interest. Timberwolves assistant coach Keanan Tibbs said the team is eager to hit the ice.

“It’s exciting to have it back, it’s exciting for the boys. They get to play in front of the hometown crowd and represent the city and Ron Gunville. Hopefully we continue growing it back to what this P.A. tournament always was for the U18 AA’s.”

Tibbs was Gunville’s nephew and praised his uncle’s work within the sport in Prince Albert.

Gunville grew up playing minor hockey in P.A. and played for his hometown Mintos and Raiders. After graduating from the WHL, he became a scout within the league and eventually with the Raiders before being promoted to their head scout, and later their Director of Player Personnel.

He was still working with the Raiders when he passed away in Dec. 2018 after a battle with cancer, and the club went on to win the WHL Championship later that season.

“He just breathed hockey,” said Tibbs. “He wasn’t there to see them pull off the victory, but he was a huge part of building that team.”

This year’s competitors come from all over Saskatchewan and two clubs from Alberta; one from Calgary, the other from Strathcona.

From within the provincial borders, the Timberwolves will be joined by the Martensville Marauders, Saskatoon Screaming Eagles, Sask East Oilers, Humboldt Broncos, and Weyburn Red Wings.

The Timberwolves are 4-3-0-0 (W-L-OTL-T) on the year so far, and Tibbs said their record doesn’t reflect how well they’ve actually been playing this year.

“We should probably be better than four and three, but it is what it is. We have a really strong team here in P.A. and I think we’re going to fare really well in the tournament.”

The games begin on Friday at the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre and a champion will be crowned on Sunday.
