Milk crates no longer welcome at Raider games

Sep 27, 2019 | 12:00 PM

One of the more iconic symbols of the Prince Albert Raiders 2019 Championship campaign has been given a permanent game misconduct.

Jody Boulet, the city’s director of Community Services confirmed the city is asking fans to respect an existing ban on milk crates, benches and platforms.

“The City provided some flexibility during the Raiders successful playoff run with the understanding that compliance with Standard Building and Fire Regulations would be expected in time for this season’s home opener,” he wrote.

Boulet indicated the city appreciated the unique atmosphere the milk crates created, but noted standing platforms are not permitted in any other Western Hockey League arena.

“The City appreciates the cooperation that was received from the public at the home opener as everyone in attendance complied with the notice,” Boulet stated. “The City will continue to work with the Raiders to consider other solutions for viewing when maximum capacity is expected for Raider Home games.”

He did not elaborate on what future plans for extra seating would include.

The Prince Albert Raiders, one of the main organizations affected by the ban, were understanding of the city’s position.

Business Manager Michael Scissons said while they’re no longer allowed, the milk crates were a symbol of a memorable season.

“One of the things that we all witnessed was the Art Hauser [building] busting at the seams. It literally could not hold anymore people,” Scissons told paNOW. “I’ll always remember the run in the 2019 playoffs that were absolutely incredible.”

Scissons reflected on the first time he witnessed a milk crate in the building.

“I was amazed when I first saw it, I thought it was just a myth, but out they came. I think people kind of rallied around the fact that standing room was fun, and you had your milk crate to watch the game,” he said.

Scissons indicated fans should be eager for the current season, whether that involves bringing a milk crate along or not.

He recommended due to an increase in season ticket sales, the perfect spot to watch the game will come at a premium. He encouraged fans who are now not able to use any height-advancing tools to get to the games early to find a good vantage point to watch this year’s incarnation of the Raiders.
