Selander captures Northern Golf Championship

Notch another big ‘W’ for the family. Cory Selander produced solid golf to capture the Men’s Northern Championship at Prince Albert’s Cooke Municipal Golf Course Monday afternoon. The win comes nearly thirty years after his dad took the same title.

The 22-year-old local came out of the gates flying in the match play final against Ashley Ziegeman and never looked back as he cruised to a comfortable 6 and 4 win.

Selander sank a long birdie putt on the opening hole to take the early lead and further birdies on the 3rd, 5th and 6th holes put him 4-up. A par at the 9th for Ziegeman and bogey for Selander reduced the deficit briefly but there was no comeback. A wayward tee shot by Ziegeman on the 12th resulted in him conceding that hole and another bogey at 13 allowed Selander to surge into a 5-up lead.

Selander boomed a drive just short of the green on 14 while his opponent leaked his tee-shot right and was forced to chip out. When Selander then chipped his second shot close to the hole Ziegeman conceded the match.

“I’ve been playing pretty good all year and the weather this weekend was awesome, “he told reporters. “I just had a lot of fun and I was playing free. Winning is awesome. I’ve been playing Cooke for ten or 12 years now and my dad [Cliff] won the Northern in 1990 so this is extra special.”

It hasn’t been a bad summer for Selander especially given he wanted to lighten the load after playing throughout his tenure at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. He also won the Club Championships at Cooke.

“I think this is it for the summer,” Selander said.
