Decoration Day

Decoration Day serves to honour fallen veterans

Jun 9, 2019 | 6:40 PM

It was a day of remembrance Sunday, at the Prince Albert Anavets – in coordination with the legion, hosted the annual Decoration Day.

The event brings together military veterans, and those who wish to pay their respects to those that have fought and died for their country.

President of the Anavets Unit 222 in Prince Albert, Alayne Lundy, told paNOW she would like to see higher attendance numbers at events like Decoration Day; but she was still happy with the day.

“Today we were honouring and remembering our veterans, to ensure that we always remember the sacrifices that have been made,” Lunday said.

“We start the day before, by going out to the cemetery and decorating each veterans flag with a Canadian flag. In the course of locating the gravesites, we speak each veteran’s name so that we never forget. Today we stood shoulder to shoulder remembering all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, and those who had to return with the horrors of war they had to live with.”

Lundy added that attendance numbers to events like Decoration Day have dwindled, but their importance has not. Noting that without the sacrifice of veterans, everyday freedoms we all enjoy would not be available.

“I would love to see a better turnout for things like Decoration Day. It’s the same principle as Remembrance Day, but usually just with better weather,” Lundy.

“To stand in inclement weather for half an hour is nothing compared to what these veterans had to go through.”
