Optimist Club makes large donation

A donation from the Prince Albert Optimist Club has lead to one Prince Albert school receiving more than $14,000, which was used to purchase a full-class set of IPads.

Prince Albert’s St. John’s Community School will use the donated IPads to allow students to further their educations, something school Principal Mark Cantin said was incredibly important.

“The fine ladies and gentleman of the Optimist Club were kind enough to make this donation … and today’s assembly was just an opportunity for the school to show our thanks,” Cantin said.

“The Optimist Club has a strong tradition of being generous in our community and this is a prime example of that and we appreciate them so much.”

Laura Reilkoff, a Grade 8 teacher at St. John’s, was the champion behind the idea to initially approach the Optimist Club, according to Cantin.

Reilkoff noted that the IPads will be used for a variety of education based endeavours, with the hope that at some point all St. John’s students will be able to take advantage of the new devices.

President of the Prince Albert Optimist Club, Dave Markling, explained the importance of the donation.

“They came to us, and told us of the need for these devices, and we are just all about helping kids in the community so it was an easy choice,” said Markling.

“This is just one of many projects that our money goes to from our fundraisers, and we appreciate the public for helping us out. It’s through them that we have the money to do great things like this.”
