Local artists showcase talent in mural

Community members were invited to leave their mark during a public painting session for a mural being put together at the Prince Albert Historical Museum.

The mural has been underway for several months, according to artist Kevin Peeace, who created the initial design. People have been invited to help with the work of art during several community-painting sessions.

“I’ve been invited to be a part of this project at the museum, so as a First Nations artist I’m putting together the components that make up the First Nations people in and around the P.A. area,” Peeace said.

“So the panels are about the Plains Cree, the Woodlands Cree, Swampy Cree, the Dene from up north, the Dakota as well as the pre-contact, so that’s the beginning. Each of the panels has elements that are particular to those cultures.”

Peeace explained various bright colours were used during the process, as a way to breathe new life into the stories he was telling.

“I wanted to be open to any ideas, I wanted people to be involved,” Peace said.

“These panels are about that involvement. I was responsible for the designing of them but there have been lots of parts that the community was responsible for.”

Peeace noted that dozens of community members have helped construct the piece over several months, and it will soon be on display for all to see at the Historical Museum.

“Some days we have had a lot of people, some days we’ve had a few. This was our last public painting session. They are planning to hang the mural up at some time around April. 26.”

Peeace hoped the public would come to see the art, and appreciate the stories being told.
