Western Mustangs remain unbeaten after 33-0 rout of Ottawa Gee-Gees

OTTAWA — The unbeaten Western Mustangs defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 33-0 on Saturday afternoon to lock up top spot in the Ontario Universities Athletics football standings.

Western (7-0) entered play in the No. 1 spot in the U Sports national rankings. The reigning Vanier Cup champions ended a five-game winning streak for the hometown Gee-Gees (5-2).

Alex Taylor did most of the damage on the ground, carrying the ball 13 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns — one for 88 yards that made it 9-0 early in the second quarter — while Cedric Joseph ran the ball 13 times for 69 yards and a TD for the Mustangs.

Quarterback Chris Merchant was 7 for 12 in the air for 126 yards, with one TD and one interception. Ottawa QB Sawyer Buettner went 17 for 30 for 114 yards with two picks.

Western’s defence held the Gee-Gees to just 181 yards of total offence.

GUELPH, Ont. — Theo Landers threw two TDs and Kiondre Smith returned a punt 62 yards for another as the Gryphons (4-3) toppled Toronto (0-7).

MONTREAL — Hugo Richard threw five touchdown strikes, including two to Mathieu Robitaille as Laval (7-0) stayed undefeated with a rout over McGill (1-5).
