Impact defence finally getting healthy for second-half playoff push
MONTREAL — After going with makeshift pairings due to injuries in the central defence early in the season, the Montreal Impact may soon find themselves with too many centrebacks.
It’s not a bad problem to have, especially with the Impact (7-11-0) heading into a stretch of seven matches in 22 days, beginning Saturday night when they play host to the Colorado Rapids (4-10-3).
Coach Remi Garde said Kyle Fisher, out since late last season with a shin injury, is expected back in a week or two while Zakaria Diallo, the club’s top off-season signing who was expected to miss the entire season with a torn Achilles tendon, should return in three or four weeks.
They will discover a team that looks to have finally solved its centreback puzzle with the recent pairing of veterans Rod Fanni and Rudy Camacho. The French partnership has formed the backbone of an Impact side that has posted four wins — all by shutout — in its last five games.
