P.A. Summer Fair celebrates 133 years

Jul 25, 2016 | 8:24 AM

The kick-off to the 133rd Prince Albert Summer Fair and Exhibition is just one week away and organizers promise every day of the fair will be jam packed with events.

The week begins with the annual Summer Fair Parade on Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. following with the ex from Aug. 2 to 6.

Brennin Jack, president of the Prince Albert Exhibition, said he excited for a new act this year called the President’s Choice SuperDogs; a touring dog agility show.

“I think they’ll be a real crowd favorite for young and old. A lot of big shows in western Canada have had them and they certainly come with a resume chalk full of some really good shows,” Jack said.

SuperDogs will run three times a day, at 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Jack said ex-goers can expect to see some high-speed dog tricks at the show.

“It’s just a fantastic show, it doesn’t matter if your five or 95, what these dogs can do is fantastic,” he said.

The West Coast Amusements midway will be back again for another year with daily rides open throughout the week from 1 p.m. to midnight.

“They’re bringing some absolutely great rides again. A lot of the old favorites and they may have a couple of new rides this year…” Jack said.

The Prince Albert Pro Chariot and Chuckwagon Association brings its beef cattle show, miniature horse show, light horse show, exhibit hall and all kinds of talent at the Dave Steuart Arena.

On Aug. 6, the final day of the fair, the Crash and Bash Demolition Derby will take place at the grandstand at 3 p.m.

One of the bigger attractions every year is the weird and wonderful kinds of food only available at the fair.

“We are going to have the most food vendors that we’ve ever had at the fair. All of our food booths have been renovated and are absolutely booked full,” Jack said. “There are going to be over 30 different kinds of food. We’ve got a fish and chip booth which is new this year, we’ve got bannock burgers, an Asian booth and we also have the spudnut booth run by Big Brothers Big Sisters; that’s always a crowd favorite,” Jack said.

To cap off the week, there will be fireworks on Aug. 6 at 11 p.m. at the grandstand.

The summer fair normally sees between 35,000 to 45,000 people come through the gates over the course of the week.

Advance wristbands are being sold around the city at a discounted price until Aug. 1 and if the sales are any indication, Jack said this year is probably going to be one of the best fairs in the last decade.
