Raiders’ Military Night more than just camo jerseys; Parenteau in contest

Mar 17, 2016 | 5:42 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders will be honouring members of the armed forces by wearing special digital camouflage jerseys during Friday’s contest against the Saskatoon Blades; the last Raiders’ regular season home game of the season.

Named Military Appreciation Night, the jerseys worn have names of players’ relatives who’ve served imprinted onto the collar. For two Raiders forwards, Luke Coleman and Dylan Williamson, their families contributions were so great, the entire circumference of the collar could barely fit all the names.

Coleman’s uncle Paul Parsons, his grandfather Churchill Coleman and great uncle George Foote are printed in his jersey.

“It really means a lot. I’m really proud of them and I know they’re really excited to come down and watch the game and be on the jersey,” Coleman said. “It’s pretty good inspiration to know they’re on my back. I’ll play hard for ‘em.”

Williamson’s great grandfathers Percy Williamson and Samuel McGladery, as well as great uncle Frederick Jacobson are celebrated in his collar.

“It’s an honour to play for them,” Williamson said. “They watched all my hockey games on T.V. and whatever….just knowing I’m playing for them is going to mean a lot.”

Persevering Parenteau

Raiders fans voted in their goaltender Rylan Parenteau to represent them in the WHL’s Royer Hardest Working Player contest. Parenteau received 39.14 per cent of the vote to win the Raiders’ nomination.

Parenteau has barely left the Raiders crease in the second half of the season, appearing in 11 of the last 12 games and 19 of the last 21. He ranks fifth among WHL goaltenders with 2,994 minutes played and seventh with 1,618 saves.

“It definitely means a lot, that’s any goalie’s goal to take the reins and run with it,” Parenteau said. “I’ve definitely taken pride in that and I’m obviously not going to take it for granted. I’m making sure I leave everything out on the ice, whether it’s a game or practice.

“I want to still be a mentor for Scotty (Raiders 1999-born goaltender Ian Scott), so there’s lots of things that come into play.”

Raiders can vote in Parenteau here by March 31.

Raiders alumni battling for 2016 CIS University Cup

Of the 50 WHL alumni that are battling it out in Halifax March 17 to 20, 11 of them have played at one point with the Prince Albert Raiders including former Raider captains Jordan Rowley and Sawyer Lange.

University of Alberta: Jordan Rowley, Sawyer Lange, Luke Siemens, Dakota Conroy, Jayden Hart, Jordan Hickmott, James Dobrowolski

University of Saskatchewan: Sean Aschim, Logan McVeigh

St. Mary’s University: Cole Cheveldave and Calder Brooks

Home and homer

The Raiders have reported they have already sold over 2,500 tickets for Friday’s game against the Saskatoon Blades, the final home game of the regular season. Only single seating and standing room tickets are available.

The Raiders and Blades will have a rematch to cap off the regular season on Saturday at the SaskTel Centre.

If the Raiders get a victory, or two points – via overtime and shootout losses – in the two-game set against the Blades, they will clinch home ice advantage to start the playoffs.
