First draw of Scotties wraps-up in P.A.

Swift Current’s Kelsey Dutton (11th) and Regina Callie’s Nancy Inglis (12th) picked up the first wins at the 2016 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Women’s Championship, Wed. Jan. 27 at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club.

Dutton defeated Balgonie’s Mandy Selzer (10th) 5-3 to kick off their tournament.

Both sides were tied at 2-2 until Dutton scored a deuce in the seventh end to take a 4-2 lead. Selzer came back with a single in the eighth to make it a one point game. Dutton added a single in the ninth to go ahead 5-3; the final score of the game.

Inglis beat Martensville’s Nancy Martin (9th) 8-2 after seven ends.

Despite starting the game with the hammer, Inglis didn’t score until her single point in the third end. Inglis then stole two in both the fourth and fifth ends to take a 5-0 lead after five ends. Martin answered with a deuce in the sixth, before Inglis ended the game with a three-ender in the seventh.

Big draw

The opening ceremonies for the tournament will be at 6 p.m., before the 7:30 p.m. draw.

Ice 1, Regina Highland’s Michelle Englot (2nd) vs. Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker (7th)

Ice 2, Regina Highland’s Jolene Campbell (4th) vs. Regina Callie’s Kristie Moore (5th)

Ice 3, Saskatoon Nutana’s Stefanie Lawton (1st) vs. Kronau’s Kim Schneider (8th)

Ice 4, Saskatoon Nutana’s Sherry Anderson (3rd) vs. Swift Current’s Robyn Silvernagle (6th)

How they qualified

Stefani Lawton, Michelle Englot and Sherry Anderson all pre-qualified for the provincials as they were the top three ranked Saskatchewan based rinks in the Canadian Team Ranking System. Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker earned a spot as she was the top ranked rink in the Sask. Women’s Curling Tour.

Robin Silvernagle won the A final in the Viterra Scotties Challenge Spiel to punch her ticket to the provincials Dec. 11-13 in Estevan. Also qualifying from that tournament were Jolene Campbell by winning the B final. Kim Schneider and Nancy Martin qualified through the C Finals.

Kristie Moore (A Finals), Kelsey Dutton (B Finals), Mandy Selzer and Nancy Inglis (C Finals) all qualified through the Last Chance qualifier in Humboldt Jan. 15-17.

There will be two draws on Thursday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and three on Friday at 10 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. There will be one last group draw on Saturday at 10 a.m. before the page playoffs.
