Raiders to retire Manson’s No. 4

Dec 3, 2015 | 10:36 AM

Mike Modano will finally get some company in the amber, wooden Art Hauser Centre rafters.

The Prince Albert Raiders announced they will retire Dave Manson’s No. 4 on Feb. 12, to sit alongside Modano’s No. 9 that was retired in 2013.

City of Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne has also declared Feb. 12-13 as ‘Dave Manson Weekend.’

“I’m very honoured and humbled. There have been a lot of good players that have worn that number. They’re just as deserving as me,” said Manson. “For me as a hometown kid watching the Raiders, I had the privilege to play for them.

“A lot of my friends at that time like a lot of young men leave home to play, I was very fortunate to be able to play in my hometown.”

Manson grew up watching the Raiders while they were still in their SJHL days, looking up to players like Gary Balicki, Robin Bartell and Dean Burles. He credits them and the rest of those teams for getting the Raiders into the WHL in the first place. Manson joined the team shortly after, in the Raiders’ second ever season in the WHL in the 1983-1984 season.

“They paved the way for the Raiders to be in the WHL in their SJ days,” said Manson. “I was fortunate enough to join the Prince Albert Raiders in their early stages of the WHL. We had success.

“I was very fortunate to play alongside a lot of great junior hockey players and guys that went on to NHL careers. I’m very thankful and honoured for that.”

Manson’s jersey will sit beside Modano’s in the Art Hauser Centre. Manson infamously welcomed Modano to the Raiders and drove him into P.A. from the airport.

Although Manson and Modano never played together in Prince Albert, they did in the Dallas Stars organization in the 1999-2000 season.

“It’s great. Mike has accomplished a lot in his career,” said Manson. “The fact he came through the Raider organization is a tribute to how we develop young players and young men. It will be an honour, for sure.”

Manson is in his 12th season coaching the Prince Albert Raiders in his second stint with the team. He’s been the team’s associate coach for the past four seasons.

Manson played with the Raiders between 1983 and 1986 and was a part of the franchise’s only Memorial Cup victory in 1985. In 218 games with the Raiders, Manson scored 24 goals and 72 assists for 96 points, along with a whopping 666 penalty minutes.

Manson went on to play 1103 career games in the NHL, was an NHL All-Star twice and scored 390 points and 2,972 penalty minutes in his career.

After the retirement ceremony on Feb. 12, the Raiders will host a Roast of Dave Manson in the Ches Leach Lounge on Feb. 13. More details can be found on raiderhockey.com.
