UPDATED: Bank staff bounce back after armed robbery

Oct 20, 2015 | 5:10 PM

As Melfort RCMP continue to investigate an armed robbery in Gronlid, a bank spokesperson says witnesses are coping well.

Thus far, the investigation has shown that a man entered the Gronlid branch of the Affinity Credit Union Tuesday afternoon at approximately 3:15 p.m.

He was wearing all black and demanded money from the two staff members working at the time.

“We’re having counselling and the like on site to support the staff through that,” said Affinity COO for Saskatchewan, Tim Schroh. “The safety of our employees is paramount, it’s our number one priority.”

Schroh said the instance is very uncommon.

“Fortunately for us at Affinity, this is very infrequent, so it’s not something that happens to us very often,” Schroh explained. “Yesterday, many of us had to dig way back in the memory banks as to the last time it occurred.”

The suspect was provided an undisclosed amount of cash and he departed the bank leaving town in what was described as a smaller to mid-size black four-door sedan.

According to Schroh, the situation was handled in the best way possible.

“We have high standards and high protocols in place and those were followed quite true.”

The suspect is described as weighing approximately 160 pounds. He is six feet 3 inches tall, with a slim build and fair skin.  He made attempts to hide his face with his clothing.

The vehicle drove out of the community and went in an unknown direction.

No one was injured during this incident.

Melfort RCMP, along with the assistance of Nipawin and Tisdale detachments, Prince Albert RCMP Dog Services and Tisdale Forensic Identification Section continue their investigation into this matter.

Gronlid is located around 30 kilometres northeast of Melfort.
