Doing the twist with Chubby Checker

Sep 26, 2015 | 4:32 PM

Chances are you have danced to Chubby Checker. And on Monday Prince Albert will be doing the twist to his music as he performs at the E. A. Rawlinson Centre.

“The Twist” is one of Checker’s most popular hits, named the number one song for the first 50 years of Billboard Hot 100 list. The song, recorded in 1959, was accompanied by the dance of the same name.

The twist was only one of many dances popularized by Chubby Checker. The artist also claims responsibility for the pony, the fly, the shake and the hucklebuck.

The 73 year-old singer said his music is an inspiration to the dance floor.

“If you’re dancing a fast dance or a song that has a beat to it, and you’re dancing and having a good time,” said Checker, “the very steps that you’re doing is Chubby Checker.”

Even after a decades long career Checker hasn’t stopped making music. He will be performing his new song “Changes” in Prince Albert.

Checker said the song carries a powerful message.

“There’s always something that you want to make better,” said Checker. “There’s always something that you would like to do to improve everything about that person in the mirror. Because all the problems we have are really in the mirror.”

Checker said his audience is typically a mix of all ages.

He said his music has a way of touching everyone and he’s looking forward to bringing his music to Prince Albert.

“I’m excited,” said Checker, “We’re going to come to town and light the fire and burn up the place and go home.”

Checker said Prince Albert won’t be the same after his concert.

“We make an impression and it just stays there.”

Tickets for the Chubby Checker concert are available by calling the E.A. Rawlinson Centre box office at 306-765-1270 or on their website.
