Excitement ahead of Raiders home opener

Sep 25, 2015 | 6:42 AM

It’s an exciting time of year for local hockey fans as the Prince Albert Raiders get set to play their first home game of the regular season.

Carrie Georgeson with community relations and marketing for the Raiders organization said about 2,000 tickets have sold for Saturday’s game against the Saskatoon Blades.

“Traditionally this is one of our biggest games of the season,” said Georgeson, “and because it’s against a rival, Saskatoon Blades, we usually have some great ticket sales for those games.”

Georgeson said ticket sales for the weekend’s home opener are pretty much standard as Prince Albert tends to be a last minute town. She said about 1600 season tickets have been sold, which is on par with the previous four seasons.

According to Georgeson, the more fans that pack into the Art Hauser Centre, the better the team will play.

“It’s a smaller rink,” said Georgeson, “but it is loud, and it is intense, and it’s the best building to play in in the Western Hockey League when it’s full. And we fully believe that our fans contribute to how the players feel and their confidence level on the ice.”

Georgeson said there has been a lot of excitement heading into this hockey season.

“With a lot of changes in the post season with bringing on a new general manager and Mark Habscheid entering his first full season as our head coach there’s a lot of positive energy in the community and we’re looking forward to getting off to a good start,” said Georgeson.

As with ticket sales, Georgeson believes sales of Raiders merchandise will pick up once the season gets started.

“People are excited to come in and see what’s new for the season, and get their Raider pride and their green all set up for the game,” said Georgeson.

Events for the home opener on Saturday begin at 4 p.m. and include kids activities and a tailgate party. Game time is at 7 p.m.
