Wildfire season not over yet

Wildfire season isn’t over yet.

Though news of raging fires in the North has died down, the threat is still there.

That’s why education and prevention coordinator Larry Fremont was at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library Monday night, to educate Prince Albert residents about the continuing threat.

The presentation was part of National Forestry Week. This year’s theme is wild fires.

The wildfire season ends Oct. 31 officially, leaving lots of time for a spark to catch.

According to Fremont the most common culprit of a late season fire is hunters, farming equipment, or cars in tall grass.

The most crucial aspect of the presentation was FireSmart, which is anything you can do to prepare for or prevent a wildfire.

“The key principle of FireSmart is education. If you’re aware of the risk and you know what to do about it, then it’s the small things that make a difference and it’s not that difficult to do the small things,” said Fremont.

National Forestry Week will be hosting several events. For a full list of talks and demonstrations visit their online calendar.
