The Importance of School Nutrition

Sep 1, 2015 | 12:19 PM

Did you know food allergies are a rising concern in schools across Canada?

It is believed that About 300,000 Canadian children under 18 years have food allergies. Children with life threatening allergies live with a stress that is foreign to most children. These children need to feel safe in order to learn and grow emotionally.  Support from the entire school community is very important in helping to keep them safe in the school setting.

Attached is information about nutrition and how to keep all the children safe with regards to food allergens.

Quick Nutrition Tips:

•             Food allergies are serious and can be life threatening. To reduce the risk, teach your kids to:

wash their hands and face with soap and water before and after eating. This helps stop food from getting on other things like desks, toys and books. Washing hands is good for everyone; it can also help reduce the spread of colds and flus.
not to share their food, drinks or eating utensils with others. Many children love to share. Teach children to share nonfood items instead (e.g. toys, stickers, games).

•             As many as 1.2 million Canadians may be affected by food allergies and this number is likely increasing, especially among children.

Foods most likely to cause a serious allergic reaction are: peanuts, tree-nuts, milk, eggs, sesame, soy, wheat, seafood and mustard.

The entire school community has a role to play in keeping students at risk of severe food allergies safe in the school setting.  To learn how you can support the safety of students visit www.foodallergycanada.ca
