Although he’s scored some absolute snipes in camp, Clegg admits his third period goal that ended up being a game winner was a bit of “a fluke.” Clegg’s high wrist shot hit Team Green goaltender Ian Scott on his shoulder and went straight in the air and eventually in the back of the net.

“It seemed like a bit of a fluke, but [if] I just shoot the puck, good things will happen.”

Clegg was among 19 players reassigned by the Raiders Tuesday morning.

The others are fellow 15-year-old’s Cole Fonstad, Carson Miller, Spencer Moe, Tyler Lowe, Lane Kirk, Chase Felgueiras and Justin Nachbaur.  They are too young to play in the WHL this season. The 16-year-old’s destined for reassignment are Cody Thompson, Ashton Heidt, Zackary Hayes, Dino Antoniadis, Mathew Checkay, Sean Thornton, Austin Crossley, Gino Astrouski and Tyler Maser, as well as 17-year-old’s Kyle Sargent and Tyler Heidt.

Fonstad, Miller, Moe and Thompson will travel with the team to Regina for this weekend’s preseason opening tournament for games 7pm Friday against the Pats and 2pm Saturday against Calgary. These games can be heard on 900 CKBI.   

The entire veteran group is still around as well as 16-year-old forwards Parker Kelly and Josh Maser.  The 27-player preseason roster also includes free agents Thomas Lenchyshyn (18) and Dane Schioler (19).

Jeff loses Inter-Squad bet to Drew

The Prince Albert Raiders had celebrity guest coaches at their inter-squad game on Monday. The term “celebrity” was used very loosely, as they picked yours truly to be one of them.

My WHL coaching debut couldn’t have gone much worse. Not only did my Team Green side lose the game 4-3, I also lost a $20 bet with actual celebrity-coach Drew Wilson, 900 CKBI’s voice of the Raiders.

I used the wager as part of my motivational speech in the first intermission to no avail, even though I went as far as saying I may have to eat macaroni and cheese for a few meals should I lose the bet.

“We let you down, it’s a pretty bad feeling,” Team Green defenceman Brendan Guhle told me, trying to hide a smile. “I’ve never had anyone’s meals on the line like that before.

“Next time, we got you.”

Inter-Squad Game Summary

Cole Fonstad, the Raiders fifth overall draft choice in the 2015 draft, got a goal and an assist for Team Gold in their 4-3 victory. Also scoring for Team Gold were Matteo Gennaro, Simon Stransky and Garrett Clegg.

Austin Glover scored a pair of goals for Team Green in a losing effort, with Jordan Tkatch getting the other.
