Music and family fun set for 3-day festival in Waskesiu

Aug 19, 2015 | 12:23 PM

Families and music lovers will be eager to get to Waskesiu this weekend.

Friday will officially kick off the festivities for the first ever Waskesiu Lakeside Festival that will continue throughout the weekend.

The three-day event that has been in the planning stages since last August is a family friendly event aimed at engaging youth and families through music and nature. Throughout the weekend, visitors to the park will be able to enjoy an outdoor musical concert as well as a variety of other family fun activities including geocaching, bouncy castles, face painting and kayak, canoe and paddleboard demonstrations to name a few.

Numerous organizations such as Parks Canada, the Waskesiu Foundation, Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce, the Community Council in Waskesiu, all came together to develop and implement part of a strategic plan to create the Festival.

Robyn Hufnagel, promotions officer with the Prince Albert National Park, said they are excited for the weekend and expect an increase in visitation of around 3000 guests throughout the course of the three-day event.

“Parks Canada is delighted to have the opportunity to work with volunteers and work together to present this new event,” said Robyn Hufnagel, promotions officer with the Prince Albert National Park.

“We wanted to highlight the uniqueness of  Waskesiu and the National Park setting and bring people up to that setting and offer a festival that brings people and families up to have fun and create those lasting memories so that they will return.”

“We hope to see that bussle that we usually have on our long weekends up here at this time of year,” she added. I guess you could say it is one more summer blast that people can have to make the most of their summer.”

Main stage performances will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and continue throughout the day until 7 p.m. Visitors to the park will have the opportunity to enjoy the musical talents of a variety different performers including Sarah Beth Keeley, Kelsey Fitch, The Grain Report, Waking up  the Neighbours, and The Steadles.

On Sunday, nature lovers will also have the opportunity to enjoy a presentation from Nature Saskatchewan as well as get a chance to meet and hear local wildlife photographer Jason Leo Bantle of All in the Wild Photography speak about his photography adventures. Paddle board races will also kick off Sunday morning at 10 a.m. on the main beach.
